Design a park/ garden for the guest to give them the experience of Zanzibar in the most natural way possible. Sustainability and ecology are important key points of the design.
The site in its current state can give us already valuable planting. This raises the question why we would take it all down and begin from 0.
The starting point is to keep as much as possible of the existing trees and shrubs. One important requirement is to keep the view towards the sea from the cabanas.
Because the resort is located on a sloped parcel, the view to the sea is visible from many places. This requirement is reached by simply opening the greenery by creating so called glades*. The clusters of cabanas will be hidden inside of these kind of glades.
In the area without cabanas the glades will form a small, lush garden inside the wilder greenery. Each of them with a different theme / topic.
This set up of the area results in less intensive maintenance, because this is only necessary inside the glades and around the paths. The rest of the greenery can grow more naturally and will need extensive maintenance only.
Going through the resort the guests will find all kinds of spice plants which tell the rich story of Zanzibar.
In the north-east corner of the resort we have located a garden where the guests can go for a walk, watch birds, learn more about spices, relax and meditate.
When moving from one glade to another, one will experience different spaces with different atmospheres and functions
The experience is like going through wild greenery and arriving in an open space in the forest. The open spaces (glades) will have clean and safe vegetation, mostly below eye-level. All kinds of shrubs, ground covers, grasses and transparent trees create a lush feeling in the space. The edges of the glades are providing a less hard transition to the wilder, existing planting.
The glades are connected by paths of crusher fines and sand.
